The Tui is a member of the honey eaters, possessing a brush tipped tongue to collect nectar from flax etc. It also feeds on insects and is known to defend it's territory aggressively. The Tui is a noisy bird in flight and in song. It has striking iconic melodies mixed with croaks, squeaks, and all manner of sounds and is also a clever mimic of other bird calls. The Tui appears black in colour but, on close inspection, is various iridescent greens and a reddish brown black topped with a whiteflecked shawl. Most characteristic are two white tufts on it's throat that earned it the nickname the 'Parson bird'.

This chipper wee chap has bright button eyes and when you press it's body it makes the sound of a real Tui.
